A 5-year-old Santa Maria boy died Friday after losing consciousness while playing on the beach, authorities said.
He stopped breathing about 5:15 p.m. while playing in the sand with family and friends at Pismo State Beach, according to a statement from State Parks officials.
After emergency crews attempted CPR, he was taken by ambulance to Arroyo Grande Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead about 6:15 p.m., officials said.
The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department is investigating the death.
The boy’s name and other details were not immediately available.
