Comments (0) | At this point, we know only the minimal facts: Six teenagers are suspected of putting a tree branch on Pomeroy Road in Nipomo, causing an accident that caused the death of motorcyclist Jacob Peter Tillema, 65, last Friday.
We should note that calling them teens is a bit of a stretch; according to the CHP, the six young suspects range in age from 12 to 14.
If the allegations prove to be true, it is indeed both horrifying and heartbreaking that such a stupid, thoughtless, juvenile act could result in a needless death.
We aren’t here to prejudge guilt or innocence, or suggest what the appropriate punishment might be should these children ultimately be found responsible. That will be a matter for the juvenile justice system to determine, after all the facts have been gathered.
But we do urge that parents go home tonight and discuss this tragic case with their own children.
We don’t mean to imply that your kids are contemplating such an act, but there is something to be learned about the unintended consequences that can occur from any number of pranks, stunts—call them what you will.
If there is any value in this sad episode, it would be to serve as a wakeup call to other youths, causing them to think twice about the consequences of their actions.
