Cold case: Remains of man found in Cambria 20 years ago will be dug up this week in attempt to identify him

closeThe remains of a man found near a Cambria cemetery more than 20 years ago will be dug up this week so investigators can use advanced technology to try and identify him.
The skeletal remains of the man - who was approximately 30 to 40 years old and 5 feet 5 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall - were found Nov. 14, 1987. It is believed he committed suicide.
The remains had been at the location for many years before they were found, according to Sheriff’s officials.
Sheriff’s investigators, a forensic anthropologist and crime scene investigators will use advances in DNA technology and other methods of identifying dental and skeletal remains in an attempt to identify the man “and bring closure to any remaining family and let people know we never give up,” said San Luis Obispo Deputy Coroner Steve Crawford.
The gun apparently used by the man to kill himself was traced to a Canton, Ohio hardware store circa 1950-1951. It was later sold at Enderle’s Hardware in Santa Ana.
No vehicle was found in the area where the body was discovered.
It may take up to a year for any results of the exhumation – which is taking place at an unidentified cemetery in the county – to be completed.
Sheriff’s officials say they often perform cold case investigations in old death cases to see if advanced technology will help solve the case.
