Mary Lawrence, a teacher from the Pleasant Valley Joint Union Elementary School District in rural northeast San Luis Obispo County, has been named Teacher of the Year by the San Luis Obispo County Education Office. Lawrence has taught 1st and 2nd grades at Pleasant Valley, a small school nestled among vineyards and ranches, for the past 6 years.

She came to San Luis Obispo County from the East Coast, where she taught in Connecticut. Her teaching career began as a drama instructor in her hometown of Columbia, Missouri. Lawrence told county education officials that she enjoys using her theater experience as part of the classroom curriculum. Pleasant Valley principal Tom Apkarian said in a statement: "Mrs. Lawrence has a passion and the talent for teaching and incorporates both her love of music and the arts into her daily lessons. She also collaborates very well with all staff members, which in turn helps them to interweave the arts into their lesson designs too." The honorees from all local school districts will be recognized at an October event. -Leah Etling
