Cal Poly holds grand opening for first phase of Poly Canyon Village student housing project

closeCal Poly held a grand opening Tuesday for the first phase of its new Poly Canyon Village student housing project.
The university is opening 1,500 beds in the complex for the upcoming start of the academic year.
When the rest of the construction is complete in 2009, the complex will have 615 apartments with 2,661 beds, along with 1,926 parking spaces and 11,255 square feet of retail space.
Opening with the first phase this fall are several businesses, including Jamba Juice, Einstein Bros. Bagel, Peet’s Coffee & Tea and Village Market Fine Foods.
The project cost $300 million to build. Construction began in March 2006.
The apartments are aimed at second-year students.
Once the complex is complete, Cal Poly will have 6,200 beds — enough to house about one-third of its total enrollment.
