SLO County

A full test of the county’s Early Warning System sirens will take place Saturday.

The 131 sirens are intended to warn the public of a radiological release at the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant but can be used for other major emergencies. The sirens are located throughout San Luis Obispo and most of the coastal areas of the county.

The sirens are tested once a year. During the test, volunteers will make sure each siren is working properly.

The sirens will be activated twice Saturday, once at noon, and again at 12:30 p. m. They will sound for 3 to 5 minutes, according to the county’s Office of Emergency Services.

No public response is necessary.

Mary Lawrence, a teacher from the Pleasant Valley Joint Union Elementary School District, has been named Teacher of the Year by the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education.

Lawrence has taught first and second grades at Pleasant Valley, a small school nestled among vineyards and ranches, for the past six years.

She came to the county from the East Coast, where she taught in Connecticut. Her teaching career began as a drama instructor in her hometown of Columbia, Mo.

Lawrence told county education officials that she enjoys using her theater experience as part of the classroom curriculum.

Pleasant Valley principal Tom Apkarian said in a written statement: “Mrs. Lawrence has a passion and the talent for teaching and incorporates both her love of music and the arts into her daily lessons. She also collaborates very well with all staff members, which in turn helps them to interweave the arts into their lesson designs.”

The honorees from all local school districts will be recognized at an October event.

A funeral service for Jake Tillema — who died after a motorcycle wreck in Nipomo last week — is set for noon to 1 p. m. Saturday at Margo Dodd Park at Ocean Boulevard and Pier Street in Pismo Beach.

A potluck gathering will follow at the Tillema residence, 2209 Willow Road on the Nipomo Mesa.

Tillema, 65, died early Friday at Arroyo Grande Community Hospital after hitting a tree branch and being thrown from his Harley Davidson on Pomeroy Road on Thursday night. Tillema was wearing a helmet when he crashed.

The CHP has identified six children, ages 12 to 14, who are suspected of having

placed the branch in the road.

None of the teens had been arrested as of Tuesday. CHP investigators needed to determine if they had enough evidence to charge the teens and then consult with the county District Attorney’s Office, said CHP officer Joe Vega.
