The university is opening 1,500 beds in the complex for the upcoming academic year.
When the rest of the construction is complete (expected in time for the winter 2009 quarter), the complex will have 615 apartments with 2,661 beds, along with 1,926 parking spaces and 11,255 square feet of retail space.
Opening with the first phase this fall are several businesses, including Jamba Juice, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Peet’s Coffee &Tea and Village Market Fine Foods.
The project cost $300 million, and construction began in March 2006.
The apartments are aimed at second- year students.
Once the complex is complete, Cal Poly will have 6,200 beds — enough to house about one-third of its total enrollment.
