Central Coast deer hunters are being asked to help state wildlife officials

determine if wildlife is a source of E. coli contamination.

The state Department of Fish and Game is asking that deer hunters in San Luis Obispo, Monterey and San Benito counties collect a six-inch segment of colon from any deer harvested. The deer hunting season opens Aug. 9.

The pieces of colon could be taken when the deer is cleaned and turned over to state wildlife biologists for examination for the presence of E. coli. Over a three-year period, biologists hope to gather 2,400 colon samples from deer, elk, wild pigs and other wild animals in the region.

E. coli infections can cause illness and death in humans. In 2006, spinach grown in Monterey and San Benito counties was tainted with E. coli bacteria, which sickened more than 200 people in 26 states.

Cattle were determined to be the source of that outbreak. However, the bacteria were also found in wild pigs from San Benito County in that same year.

The study will help wildlife officials better manage deer herds in the vicinity of vegetable crops. For more information about the study, visit the state Department of Fish and Game’s Web site: www.dfg.ca. gov. —David Sneed
