It’s been three positions in three seasons for David Fullerton.

Linebacker, free safety and now strong safety.

But if Saturday’s scrimmage—the first live action of training camp for the Cal Poly football team—is any indication, he might not have to go four for four next year.

Within a matter of moments during the Mustangs’ 90-minute scrimmage at the I Field, the redshirt junior had two turnovers for scores, including an interception return that went unimpeded for 86 yards.

That came after a 7-yard touchdown on a fumble recovery in his previous series.

“That’s what we always stress,” Fullerton said, “getting the ball out, forcing turnovers. That’s one of our keys to victory as a team, winning the turnover battle.”

Fullerton certainly feels like he’s found a home at strong safety.

“It’s a little better for me,” he said. “At free safety, I was a little more timid. (Now,) I can get closer to the line. It fits me a little better. I feel a little more comfortable.”

Fullerton wasn’t the only starter looking comfortable during the scrimmage, which pitted first-string players against the second and third strings.

Senior quarterback Jonathan Dally completed six of his first seven passes, two for touchdowns, and consistently found running lanes on the option.

Dally hit senior receiver Ramses Barden for an 11-yard touchdown on a play-action slant to cap the opening drive. And he later connected with Tre’dale Tolver on a deep pattern down the sideline that Tolver took 94 yards.

The only quarterback off-limits to contact, Dally’s runs were blown dead once he got a few yards past the line of scrimmage.

“Today, it looked really good,” Dally said. “The line did a really good job making gaping holes for our backs, giving us time to throw. We got a lot of really good looks.”
